In 2009/10, Greenpeace published a report accusing the “Sinar Mas Group” of being responsible for various issues, including social conflicts related to land and natural resource rights due to their plantation expansion.
It has been claimed that several subsidiaries of GAR and SMART are part of Sinar Mas. However, it should be clarified that GAR and SMART are separate legal entities and not subsidiaries of Sinar Mas. Sinar Mas is not a business entity or a legal entity, but rather a trademark or a general term.
In response to the allegations made by Greenpeace, SMART has engaged two reputable certification institutions, Control Union Certifications (CUC) and the British Standard Institute (BSI) Group. These institutions have collaborated with the Faculty of Forestry at Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) to conduct an Independent Verification Study (IVEX: Independent Verification Exercise).
